Merry Christmas?

I'm going to have to get on my soap box about this.....

My kids can no longer celebrate Christmas at school.  It's ok for them to talk about Santa, or have a Holiday Party, or acknowledge Kwanzaa or Hanukkah, but it's not ok to talk about Christmas or the birth of Christ.

Does anyone else have an issue with this!!!???

I certainly do not want to be offensive about my religion.  And I want people who celebrate Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or some other holiday to be able to be recognized and talk about their belief.  I'm not even saying that it's bad to call the parties Holiday Party rather than something else in the spirit of being inclusive.  But when my 2nd grader is told that "We don't talk about Christmas or Jesus - we might offend someone." Things have gone WAY TOO FAR!

Since when are we so "politically correct" that we can't mention the name Jesus.  After all, he is the reason for Christmas.  When you take Christ out of Christmas - you just have Mas.  Are you offended because someone says Merry Christmas to you?  I wouldn't be offended if someone wished my Happy Ramadan.  I would just with them Happy Ramadan back, believing that they were being cheerful in the spirit of their religion.

Well my friends, at the risk of being offensive.....

Coal Creek Canyon Flood - Life at 9,000 Feet

It's been a really crazy couple of months.  The flood was so unexpected, except by the wise folks who lived through the last one in the 60's.  We live at 9,000 feet - why should we be worried about a flood?  The "robo call" came in the middle of the night - "Flash Flood, move to higher grounds"  We're on top - where do we go?  A slightly panicked middle of the night survey revealed rain like I haven't seen since living in Texas, several places that required large buckets from our leaking roof (our little log cabin isn't really made for heavy rain - snow, yes - rain, no).  Water was streaming down the driveway and the road to the horse paddock like rivers, but everything else seemed to be ok.

Morning light brought an intense watching of the news, checking on neighbors, more rain and the realization that we were trapped on the top of our mountain - the road in and out of the canyon was impassable.  As more news poured in, we weren't the only folks trapped - and some were in much worse shape than we were.  As the news focus turned to Estes Park, Boulder and Lyons, our hearts ached for them and wondered what was going on in Coal Creek - we were no longer in the news reports, but we were still trapped - the gas station washed away, no gas so no heat or hot water.  I never thought we would rely so heavily on FaceBook, our community page was the only good way to get news and information - what roads were caving in - routes (constantly changing) to get in or out of the canyon.

We live in a really great community.  So many people were trapped, many had to be rescued.  The commute to town went from 20 minutes to an hour and a half.  Making a supply run?  Let everyone know so they can bring back necessities.  Whispering Pines Church became a free and open pantry supply to anyone in need.  Someone with a backhoe diverted the stream so it no longer went through Mike's liquor store so he could re-open - you just had to wade through the stream (which is now running down the highway) and climb over the sandbags to get in.  No gas, so folks brought back gas cans full from town so we could get empty tanks filled up again.  Everyone drug out their camping gear for hot meals, and those with propane shared their still hot water for showers while many folks just embraced the briskness of a very cold one.

It's been 2 months now.  They just got the road reopened.  I made my first drive down yesterday.  It struck me that with access to town and my office again, my life is largely returning to normal at 9,000 feet.  Not so for my dear friends and neighbors living down the canyon at lower elevations.  Houses that once had a modest bridge or culvert to cross to get from the highway to their homes now have a giant chasm standing in their way.  My dear friend John's garage is undermined.  Other's homes are undermined.  It doesn't look like the canyon I've driven through for the past 10 years anymore.  I have to admit to shedding a few tears.  But mountain folks are tough and resilient.  They will persevere, and we will help them.

My thoughts and prayers are with you my friends and neighbors.  I'd ask that you add them to your prayers as well.  If the spirit moves you - you can do more through volunteering or financial support via Canyon Cares www.canyoncares.org

Happy October - Happy Fall!

Well, it happened.  We finally got snow today!  I'm honestly not ready.  I guess that's why I'm dragging my feet on designing for the next fall collection (Fall 2014 that would be).  Perhaps the snow will get me in the mood.

We do have some cool things happening with the LamanBlu Fall 2013 collection.  We have a new distributor in Asia, so LamanBlu will be available in South Korea within a couple of weeks!  We're really excited - they've promised to send us photos of the display in the store - we'll share with you when we get them.

We're also working on a new partnership with Amazon - we'll be launching before the end of the month and you will be able to buy LamanBlu on Amazon.com!  (hence the lack of updated shopping on our website at the moment!)

Looking for gifts for fall birthdays?  We have a few of our fab faux fur leopard capes left - they are so soft and luxurious, and lined with fleece to make them extra snuggly.
They're not on our website yet, so shoot us an email if you want one - customerservice@lamanblu.com
We have sizes S, L, and XL left - special price $48!

Have a great fall weekend!
Salu,
Holli

Fire and Rain

A friend of mine posted this recently on her FaceBook page and I couldn't resist sharing.  Kind of been our experience in Colorado this year.  The kids finally went back to school today after it being closed for a week and a half due to the floods.  We've been one of the fortunate households - leaking, no flooding inside.  We also have gas which means cooking and hot water - something of a luxury around here these days.  They're projecting to have the highway leading to our canyon open by Thanksgiving......

It's really astonishing, the power of nature.  It's also really amazing how a community can pull together to support each other in extreme circumstances.

Fires in Colorado - Again!

So I had fully intended to continue my seasonal mix-up musings.  But with the events of yesterday, I'm feeling a bit more like life - not fashion.  (And no - fashion is not life!  Fashion is fun, and I love it, but let's face it folks - it's a bit frivolous.  And frivolity certainly has its place.  But let's recognize where that place appropriately is for heaven's sake.)

Fires are burning all over Colorado again this summer.  I am so thankful to all those working so hard to protect us.  I am so sorry for those who have lost homes, pets and even loved ones (though thankfully that number is small).

We got a first hand taste of it yesterday.  A fire started probably a mile from us as the crow flies - down the mountain from us - fire burns UP.  We got the evac notice.  Be ready to leave at a moment's notice and if you have livestock - get them out NOW.  We have horses.  And we have a horse trailer.  And my husband had the truck - an hour and a half away.  After a moment to panic and text him to GET HOME NOW!, and after a moment to pray, we (the kids and I) went into action.

We grabbed our "fire list" and started working - harness on the dog, halters on the horses (which have dog tags on them with our cell phone numbers), important items (wedding pics, baby pics, passports, insurance papers, baby videos) into the car.  Grab my mom's wedding ring and mine, our family Bible and travel diaries, the Raggedy Ann doll my mother made me, the Toni doll my Godmother left me, the kids most important stuffed animal and the laptops, wallet and cell phones.  Toss everything in the trunk of the car.  Check.  Two extra minutes - grab a couple of paintings off the walls made by my kids and my dad, the box with the most special kids artwork.  Call the neighbor girl up the street  to make sure she's not home alone.  We're ready.

Meanwhile, my husband is racing home but had the presence of mind to call a nearby friend with a Suburban - Darwin arrived just as we finished loading the car and hooked up the horse trailer.  We got the horses loaded without a hitch and took off down the mountain to another friend who was well below the fire.

Oh, and I should mention - how many folks called to see if we needed help and how many stopped as we were loading on their way down to see if we needed help.  We really have a great and caring community.

The first responders worked so hard to get that fire contained.  It was burning right next door to a friend of mine.  They weren't home at the time, but animal control went in and got the dogs out safely.  It's sort of a joke around here that the fire department hasn't lost a foundation yet.  But we all understand that their objective really isn't to save a single burning house.  Their goal is to save the mountain.  They are heroes and certainly did their jobs well yesterday.  I'm sorry and sad for our neighbor's that lost their house.  And I'm thankful it ended up just being one house.

Once they announced 100% containment we went home.  Left the car loaded until we got the "all clear" announcement several hours later.  Then we unloaded our most precious possessions once again.  It's kind of liberating to know that the things you care about most you can take in a small car (and a horse trailer :)

We were fortunate.  But you know what, even if the fire would be been bigger, and even if we had lost our house.  We would still be fortunate.  Fortunate to have people fighting for us.  Fortunate to have a system that gives us time to collect our most important things and get out safely with our loved ones.  Fortunate that what really matters in this world isn't "stuff".

Season Scramblers

So, last post was about our photo shoot for Spring 2014, before that, we were talking about the current season, Spring 2013 and before that we talked about Fall 2013.  Now we're ready to start working on Fall 2014.  Seasons and years are always scrambled around here....that's just the way the fashion industry works!  I started writing 2014 on my checks several months ago (much to the dismay of some of my utility providers!)  I remember back when I used to do women's wear - with 5 seasons a year - and we did catalog (which is further out than regular retail) and we did monthly delivery collections for a couple of the big department stores.  I honestly never knew what season it was - I would have to walk outside in the morning so I could go back to my closet to pick a sundress or sweater to wear to work.

Back to fall thoughts.  I always like to take a recap of the previous fall season before starting a new one.  WGSN and FGI have just released their season recaps, so it's a great time to revisit what the big selling points of  the season.  And it's a perfect time for you to start thinking about what you will soon be seeing in stores for back to school!  Here we go - according to WGSN:

Best colors:  Raspberry and Blue

Best Prints: Geometrics

More to come next week from the runway recap reports!

Happy - whatever season it is!

Spring Ramblings

Wow - it's been crazy busy, photoshoots for LamanBlu and Hang Ten Gold, Memorial Day Weekend, the end of school, the start of a strange summer break for the kids (feels more like November with blustery winds and periodic snow than summer dawning).

I'm faced feeling a bit blustery myself actually.  We're moving our offices today to downtown Denver, next to Ralph's Industrial Sewing.  We've used the DDI studio there for quite some time for various activities, but now we'll have our very own spot.  We'll still keep our mountain design studio - too much solitude and inspiration generating to walk away from entirely, but we've simply outgrown our space.  I'm excited and a little sad in all honesty.  But I guess the only constant in life is change.

My kids are changing too.  My daughter, going into second grade is truly becoming independent.  My son, just entering his teenage years is a whole different story.  He's in the midst of wavering back and forth from wanting to be dropped off somewhere just to explore his independence (away from parents) and then still wanting to hold my hand during an intense part of an action movie we're watching together.  It's sweet, but makes me a little wistful.  When did he grow up so much?  I can't believe how the past 13 years have flown by.

And it's spring, and I miss my mom.  She passed away suddenly just over 6 months ago.  Sometimes it seems like much longer and sometimes it still seems like yesterday.  Memorial Day was a big reminder of her loss.  It's always been a big holiday for my family growing up - the first weekend we splash the boats in the water and head to the lake for 3 days.  Most families have standard meals which become traditions for Christmas or Easter - our meal tradition was Memorial Day.  Smoked baby back ribs, tabouli, baked beans dressed with bacon and homemade peach ice cream.  Even though we now live too far to partake in the boat and lake festivities, we still celebrate with the same meal.  It was sad making it this year knowing she wasn't around.

But it is spring, the season of new beginnings, a season of hope.  Things are good.  I'm thankful for family and friends and a great job.  Let's remember to stop and small ALL the spring flowers - not just the roses.  It really is a beautiful life.

Salu,
Holli

Happy Spring! Or is it Winter?

Well, I know most of you are enjoying spring right now but here's what it looks like at my place:
The deck is reporting about 2 feet of snow!   Since it doesn't feel like spring here - I thought I'd talk about fall and winter.  Denim is a huge trend for the upcoming fall.  And everyone keeps talking about which denim finishes and trims are going to be huge. According to Women's Wear Daily:  "It’s been a decade since denim has seen this much action!"

Here's a rundown of what's hot:
  • Velvet Trim
  • Studs
  • Shredded
  • Printed
  • Cross Dyed
LamanBlu isn't a denim house per se, but we do love it - particularly when it's mixed with Tencel for extra softness or done in some other creative styles to make it lush.  Our take on denim for the season?

Mix it with lace and velvet ribbons:

Bring on the prints!

Everything is softer in chambray with a shine:
Reversible Cross - Dyed?  Bring it on!
Who doesn't love the look of denim?  We've even honored it in our washable silk ombre dyed set:

Spring 2013 Trend Report from the Runways

Happy Valentine's Day!  And it also means that it's official - spring has sprung (though, I have to admit, it's snowing in our mountain design studio today - but that's what spring means in the mountains - snow!)  But I digress - we wanted to share with you the trends which are proving out to be important for the spring season, so you can make sure you have what you need in your closet to present yourselves most fashionably!

A huge trend on the runway was the new comfort factor - waistline skimming shifts, A-line dresses, flared skirts.  Comfort, of course is always a criteria for children's clothes - not just clothes that don't pinch but clothes that move with the child and allow them to play freely.

The pairing of opposites has been around for a while - and continues - sheer/opaque being a strong story.

The color story was dramatic - from brights to whispery pastels.  Pure, unadulterated white opened many shows.

Best Bets:  Shift style dresses, full skirts, shorts, pajama styled looser pants and capris, color, prints, white.

Happy Shopping!
